It should be noted that there are no restrictions/limits set on the categories above. The overall eligibility will be determined by the volunteer individuals' qualifications and the proposals received for potential projects.

Average program duration: 2-6 months.

Program availability: All year round.

Qualifications/skills required: Dependent on the available projects and applicants' capabilities.

Language: English proficiency at the least.

Stipend/benefits:

Eligible volunteers:
Anyone from all over the world between the ages of 20 and 65. Generally, anyone in this age group willing to challenge and be challenged.

Living arrangements:
There are group arrangements (e.g. in hostels), home-stays (adopt-a-volunteer program), and independent arrangements.


FEES

Registration fees: $ 35 dollars for first 2 years.
Administration fees: $ 250 dollars per project 10% discount for returning volunteers.
Above fees to be paid 2 weeks prior to arrival date.

This covers recruitment, pre departure and in country orientation, in country 24 Hour staff support, monitoring during stay, airport transfers arriving and departing, basic language instruction and correspondence.

In – Country Costs to volunteer (if paying for all your costs).


Accommodation: USD 40 including breakfast per night (hotels and hostels).

Meals: USD 16 per day

Communications: USD 8 per day

Transport: USD 12 per day includes Taxi use (cab sharing permitted & negotiable), public transport e.t.c.

Per day cost: USD 76


Contingency: USD 150 for the whole trip. Purchasing an international insurance cover from home is recommended.

Taking tours: USD 250 economy style and some take home shopping.

Allowance for one month = USD 76
30 days = USD 2280
For every additional week add USD 480 per week as you will be more familiar with daily living costs.

This costs are based on the assumption that you could be covering all your costs, where a project does have a budget allocation from the sponsoring organization, for volunteers, we shall ensure that the project covers some of these costs e.g. accommodation, meals, transport etc. This will however; vary from one project to the next.


However; since in most cases you will be based in a given locality during the period of project thus some of the costs may not be incurred fully.

We shall endeavor to ensure that all costs are kept reasonably economical.

Another measure is that you shall be able to cut cost if your project includes home stays as you will have to contribute an upkeep allowance or be allowed to cook for yourselves.

Recommended Upkeep allowance is 75 dollars per week.

Weekly shopping is 75 dollars per week.

You will be notified before departure of all the arrangements made in order to organize your budget appropriately.

These living costs will vary over a period due to changes in currency valuation in the various countries that Tembea Africa is operating projects.

 Orientation Program

Process and Procedures

 

a. Reception at Airport: The pick up service will be clearly identified with ID badges for contracted parties, and employee identity cards for Tembea Africa Staff.

b. In transit briefing: Security in traffic and on the street, and how to address hotel staff.

c. Depending on time arrival, a rest of about one hour to two hours is allowed before in country and project briefings. Overnight stays will be organized where required.

d. In-Country and Project Briefings:

 

Facts and statistics: In general overview with a special focus on the project area and people (printed briefings will be availed for reference).

Accommodation: This will be coordinated by Tembea Africa in regard to the group of volunteers. Appropriate secure accommodation will be organized, from hotel and hostels, to guest houses and home stays, without undue compromise to the quality of accommodation and food, depending on your project location and its operation.

Embassy registration:
Should be done at the earliest opportunity. In addition, ensure that return tickets are re-confirmed.

Currency: Its valuation, how and where to change money (selected banks and selected forex bureaus - Forex exchange is not done on the streets), where to cash travelers' cheques, opening bank accounts with pre-arrangements in agreeable efficient and cost effective banks. It is encouraged that you use credit cards to handle transactions requiring large amounts of cash wherever possible.

General transport system in the city and up country: Options available in terms of car hire and taxi hiring. Appropriate fares and how to select suitable transport, from flying to taking a boda boda.

Personal security: Do not carry excess cash around but if you do, keep in inner pockets. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry especially heirlooms. Ask for the tourist police when filing a report at the police station. Always ensure that you are escorted by an approved Tembea Africa guide or assistant. The guide and assistant WILL have I.D. on them. Digital cameras and other gadgets should be used at suitable selected places, market areas, streets. While using public transport be careful about using these gadgets. Clothing should just be presentable, comfortable and casual.

Communications: Mobile phone handsets will be availed to volunteers but will remain the property of Tembea Africa, this is especially for volunteers based far out in the field where alternative communication means are limited. The various tariffs and networks in the country will be elaborated on.

Insurance covers and Emergencies: The volunteers will be expected to have arrived with international cover, or be registered with local insurance before leaving for the project area, the recommended local agent is AIG Group. Entertainment: Will be provided at the volunteer(s) expense. It includes evening outings, nyama choma outing, game drives, e.t.c. that are available and appropriate. Whenever required a competent tour operator will be hired, again at the cost of the volunteer(s) expense. An allowance will be provided to the accompanying guide or Tembea personnel for emergencies. In some cases transport may be organized by Tembea such as, during the farewell dinner or team building activities deemed necessary by Tembea.

Progress of the volunteers: Will be monitored in the intermediate, and end sections of the project. Forms designed to this end with due adaptability to the type of volunteers e.g. students may need to fill in evaluations that will also give information that can be assessed by their tutors. Consequently, the progress will be monitored to give us information on how to improve the volunteer service.
